Loach screening

British film director Ken Loach was asked yesterday, at a London screening of his film about the Spanish civil war, Land And Freedom, whether he would make a film about Palestine. He said: “If only film-making were about making a list of the world’s hotspots and going ‘tick’.” Loach, who won the Palme D’or at Cannes this year for The Wind That Shakes The Barley, added that the situation in Palestine made him angry, but that apart from anything else he didn’t have “the language to get at the nuances” there.

Israel fears over soldier

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert fears that the release of soldier Gilad Shalit might get in the way of operation Summer Rain. “There are parts of Gaza we have not yet destroyed,” Olmert said in a statement. “Hamas must keep onto him until then.”
